Blackjack Table Essentials: Hardware to Chips

Setting up a blackjack table? Here’s a simple guide to the gear you’ll need. We’ll cover hardware (things that attach to the table), accessories (used during play), plus chips and chip storage.

Note: This article doesn’t cover how to build a table. If you’re buying equipment for an existing table or planning a new setup, keep reading for a breakdown of what you’ll need.

Blackjack Table Hardware: Chip Trays, Drop Boxes, and More

These are the items that get built into or attached to the table. What you need will depend on your specific table, so check measurements carefully to make sure everything fits before you buy. Just remember—hardware isn’t one-size-fits-all, so be sure your picks match your table’s general layout.

  • Layout – This is the printed felt that is stretched and attached directly to your table top. We offer high-quality casino-style blackjack layouts with “pays 3 to 2” blackjack, available in both dealer stands on 17 and hits on soft 17 versions. There’s also a “pays 2 to 1” layout that’s great for casual home or party play. Learn more about modern casino “felt” fabric here.
  • Underlayment – A soft layer placed beneath the layout to give the surface a cushioned feel and help cards slide cleanly. Most setups use foam or rubber. Learn more in our underlayment guide.
  • Armrest & Padded Rail Materials – We offer vinyl upholstery material and foam padding to help you build a comfortable, finished rail around your table.
  • Chip Tray – Sits in front of the dealer to hold and organize chips. We offer several 3 styles of 9-row trays and one 10-row tray in durable ABS, each with different dimensions and capacity. Choose the one that fits your table and leaves enough room for the dealer and other equipment. For a more authentic setup, check out our lockable metal trays with lids, available in a versatile multi-size option and a casino-grade version.
  • Discard Holder – This piece screws directly onto the table and holds used cards after dealing. We carry models in clear and red acrylic, available in single-deck through 8-deck sizes.
  • Drop Box & Bill Slot – Adds a secure way to handle cash at the table. We carry an all-metal drop box with sleeve, including locks and keys—great for home or event play. We also carry casino-grade setups if you want a more professional finish.
  • Drink Cup Holders – Keeps drinks in place and off the felt. We stock stainless steel, brass-finish, and plastic cup holders, with optional ashtray inserts available for the metal versions.
  • Peeker – A small mirror installed in front of the dealer to check the hole card discreetly. Great for learning or authentic play.

What Accessories Go on a Blackjack Table?

These are items that sit on top of the table or are used during play. They’re easy to add or swap out, and they help make the game feel polished and professional.

  • Playing Cards – Look for casino-quality cards, especially 100% plastic or plastic-coated paper for durability and clean handling. We stock a range of professional-grade cards suitable for home or commercial use. Learn more in our article comparing plastic to laminated paper cards.
  • Cut Cards – Used to cut the deck after shuffling and to conceal the bottom card. Available in multiple colors and in bridge or poker size to match your shoe and deck.
  • Dealer Shoe – Holds the deck(s) and helps the dealer slide out one card at a time. For most blackjack games, the four-deck or 6-deck shoes are perfect, both available in heavy duty clear acrylic. Choose based on the number of decks you plan to use.
  • Signage – Help players learn the table rules at a glance. We offer custom table signs engraved on ⅛” 3-ply PVC and elegant holders in black or gold.
  • Toke Boxes – Used to collect dealer tips during live play. We offer a variety of home and casino-grade toke boxes—ideal if you’re looking to simulate real casino conditions.
  • Table Brush – Keeps your layout clean between games. A soft-bristled table brush helps remove dust and stray debris without damaging the felt. Learn more about caring for your casino layout in our guide.
  • Dealer Aprons & Visors – Great for adding a uniform or themed look to your setup. Check out our dealer aprons in two sizes for parties, events, or serious game nights.

How Many Chips Do I Need For Blackjack?

Chips are the currency of the game, and one of the of the first choices you’ll need to make is whether to go with solid color chips or chips with printed value denominations. Solid chips (without values printed on them) are more flexible—you can assign any value to each color, making them useful across different games or when adjusting for low- or high-stakes play. On the other hand, chips with printed denominations are easier to use, especially for newer players, since no one has to remember which color is worth what. Plus, they often come in fun, casino-style designs that can elevate the feel of your table. We carry several non-denomination and denominated poker chip options at various weights

As for how many chips to get, we generally recommend starting with a 500-chip set. That gives you enough variety and volume for mid-size home games or small casino nights. If you’re just starting out or hosting smaller groups, you could get by with as few as 300 chips. Here’s a typical 500-chip starter breakdown that works well for blackjack:

  • 100x $1 white
  • 200x $5 red
  • 100x $25 green
  • 50x $100 black
  • 50x $500 purple

What’s the Best Way to Store and Organize Blackjack Chips?

Once you’ve got your chips, it’s time to decide how to store and transport them. Here are some of the most common options:

  • Aluminum Chip Cases – Lightweight, affordable, and come in sizes from 300 to 1,000 chips. Great for home use.
  • Heavy-Duty Aluminum Chip Cases – Built tougher than standard cases, with reinforced corners and thicker walls. Good choice if you move your chips around often.
  • ABS Plastic Chip Cases – Durable and scratch-resistant, with a molded interior to hold chips and cards securely.
  • Acrylic Chip Carrier with Stackable Racks – W offer options that hold up to 1,000 chips or 600 chips in standard 100-chip stackable racks. Comes with a handle for easy transport.
  • Clear Acrylic Chip Racks – Stackable 100-chip trays, without lids or with lids. Perfect for storing chips at home with or without the carrier.

Must-Have Blackjack Gear (and What You Can Add Later)

Whether you’re hosting a home game, planning an event, getting your blackjack table set up right makes a big difference. From built-in hardware to cards, chips, and storage, each piece plays a role in making the game run smoothly and look professional.

If you’re just getting started, here are the basics you’ll want right away:

  • Chips – Either plain or with denominations, and enough to support your group size
  • Cards – Casino-quality decks for durability and handling
  • Cut Cards – One for cutting the deck, one for the bottom of the shoe
  • Dealer Shoe – Especially for multi-deck play
  • Discard Holder – Keeps used cards organized and off the table
  • Basic Chip Tray – For organizing house chips (or use a rack at first)

Once you’ve got the essentials down, here are some items you can add later to upgrade your setup:

  • Drop Box & Bill Slot – For collecting cash like a real casino
  • Toke Box – If you’re simulating a tipping environment
  • Custom Layout & Foam Underlayment – Adds a clean look and smoother play
  • Dealer Apron or Visor – For events or casino nights
  • Cup Holders – For player convenience
  • Deluxe or Locking Chip Trays – If you want a more secure, permanent setup

As a final tip—always check your table’s measurements or building plans before you buy, especially for hardware. Not every item fits every table, and a little planning up front can save you time and frustration later.
